Continuation of rehabilitation program for cns demyelinating diseases

Demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) are characterized by the presence of foci or plaques of demyelination (loss of myelin) in some areas throughout the neuraxis, leaving motor, visual, speech, and bladder control sequelae, affecting independence in basic daily life activities. Treating neurological disorders, one of the main causes of disability and death in Cuba, is a major goal at medical facilities throughout the Caribbean Island.

State-of-the-art technology, highly qualified professionals and advanced treatments are combined to give an appropriate response to improve the people’s quality of life on a case-by-case basis.

In Cuba’s health system, specialized institutions treat patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease, as well as those suffering from disorders that affect mobility or from degenerative diseases of the central nervous system. In that regard, Cuba’s neurology services have also succeeded in using several surgical procedures on patients whose mobility has been affected.

Cuba’s Neurological Restoration Program is a combination of pharmacological, surgical and rehabilitation methods, which are based on the capacity of the nervous system to recover. The program allows doctors to compensate the existing affections and stimulate the structural and functional recuperation of nervous activity. Neurology specialists have extensive experience in performing laparoscopic and sterotaxic surgery, using computerized planning and neuro-physiologic verification. Surgical treatments also involve a highly trained multidisciplinary teams made up of neurologists, brain surgeons, psychiatrists, internists, psychologists, urologists, kinesiologists, speech and occupational therapists, and nurses.

In addition to Parkinson’s disease, the program benefits patients who have suffered cranial-encephalic traumatisms, traumatic lesions of the spinal cord, damage caused by the cerebral aging, Alzheimer’s disease and sequels of cerebral anoxia. It also benefits children suffering from brain paralysis and patients affected by neuro-muscular disorders or damaged peripheral nerves, among other ailments that hurt the nervous system.

Most patients require 28 additional days of rehabilitation treatment to consolidate the progress made in the initial program. For this reason we propose a second program of continuation for those patients who can stand on their own or with the help of his companion without requiring nursing care.
